Harry Potter - The Ministry of Magic
In the Wizarding World, the main government is known as the Ministry of Magic. The Ministry is divided into multiple departments which control and regulate the community. Below you'll find a complete guide to the Ministry of Magic.
About the Ministry
The Ministry of Magic is located below the streets of downtown London. To gain access to the Ministry, one has to simply look for a graffiti filled alley which contains an old shabby phone booth. You must pick up the receiver, hold it high above your head and dial 6 2 4 4 2 or Magic. A receptionist will answer and will ask you to state your name and reason for entering the Ministry. You will be presented with a small silver badge which reads your name and business. Once you enter the Ministry, you are required to be searched and have your wand examined at reception.
"Visitor to the Ministry, you are required to submit to a search and present your wand for registration at the security desk, which is located at the far end of the Atrium. The Ministry of Magic wishes you a pleasant day."
At that moment, the booth shoots down underground where you are presented at the Ministry's Atrium. From the books, we are told that the Atrium is a long splendid room with polished wood floors and a peacock blue ceiling. The ceiling is covered with glowing symbols which are constantly changing, looking like a huge swirling pattern. On each side of the Atrium are huge fireplaces which are all part of the Floo Network. There are fireplaces for arrivals and departures. The first thing you will notice when entering the Atrium is a huge golden fountain directly in the centre.
"A group of golden statues, larger than life-size, stood in the middle of a circular pool. Tallest of the all was a noble-looking wizard with his wand pointing straight in the air. Grouped around him were a beautiful witch, a centaur, a goblin, and a house-elf. The last three were all looking adoringly up at the witch and wizard. Glittering Jets of water were flying from the ends of the two wands, the point of the centaur's arrow, the tip of the goblin's hat, and each of the house-elf's ears, so that the tinkling hiss of water was added to the pops and cracks of Apparators and the clatter of footsteps as hundreds of witches and wizards, most of whom were wearing glum, early morning looks, strode toward a set of golden gates at the far end of the hall."
As you Harry continues walking, he notices the following sign just below the fountain. "All proceeds from the Fountain of Magical Brethren will be given to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries ". Seated at a desk to the left, beneath a sign saying security, a baldly-shaven man in peacock blue robes sits. The wizard holds up a golden rod of sorts and passes it up and down Harry just like at the airport. He then asks Harry for his wand. Harry gives it to him and it is placed on a scale type instrument. A little piece of parchment spurts out from the instrument with the following words:
“Eleven inches, phoenix feather core.
Been in use for four years.”
Next, Harry walks over to the elevator where he has a choice of multiple floors he can visit. about each level the Ministry of Magic
Levels at the Ministry
First Level: Not Known
Not much is currently know about this floor, it could possibly house the Minster of Magic's office.
Second Level: Department of Magical Law Enforcement
This level is home to the Improper Use of Magic Office, the Auror Headquarters and the Wizengamot Administration Services. Harry gets off at this level where he walks through a set of huge oak doors. He finds himself in a room filled with cubicles, this was the Auror Headquarters. He goes through another set of huge oak doors which take him into a small dimly lit passage. By turning left, and then right, Harry was standing face to face with the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office. This is where Mr. Weasley works.
Third Level: Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes
This level houses the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, Obliviator Headquarters and the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee.
Fourth Level: Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
This level houses the Beast, Being, and Spirit Divisions, Goblin Liaison Office and Pest Advisory Bureau.
Fifth Level: Department of International Magical Cooperation
This level includes the International Magical Trading Standards Body, the International Magical Office of Law, and the International Confederation of Wizards.
Sixth Level: Department of Magical Transportation
This level deals with all aspects of magical transport. This includes the, Floo Network Authority, Broom Regulatory Control, Portkey Office and Apparation Test Center.
Seventh Level: Department of Magical Games and Sports
Level seven houses the British and Irish Quidditch Headquarters, Official Gobstones Club, and Ludicrous Patents Office.
Eighth Level: The Atrium
This is the main reception area for the Ministry of Magic. This is where you arrive after signing in from the old Muggle phone booth. On this level you have your wand searched and must state your business in the Ministry of Magic.
Ninth Level: The Department of Mysteries
This level is misty and dim. You can see a set of steps leading up to level 10 on the left.
Tenth Level: The Courtrooms
This level can only be reached by steps and is a fairly dark and stone covered chamber. On this level Harry had his hearing. Many wizards are sentenced to Azkaban from these courtrooms.
